Listening to Your Menstrual Cycle: Your Body Knows the Way
As women, we naturally move in cycles. We naturally experience life deeply through our bodies and we are not designed to show up the same way, every day, forever. We may feel energised one week and falling apart the next. Yet, this is not a sign that there is something wrong with us. It is our bodies showing us how to pay attention to our body’s energy and natural cycle. Our bodies are consistently showing us and teach us about rhythms and cycles that are built into who we are as women.
When we bring cycle-awareness into the monthly menstrual cycle, we find four distinct energetic phases, each with its own emotional tone and spiritual invitation. The monthly menstrual cycle offers us insight and permission - to rest when rest is needed and to rise when we're ready to rise. Following the body’s need for deep rest during menstruation allows the body to nourish and recoup to then have the energy and vitality needed for our overall health as women.
The menstrual cycle reflects the cycles just like the moon and seasons. Consciously following your weekly cycle, invites you to stop fighting you’re your natural rhythm and instead embodying it as a map for powerful guidance.
Week 1: Menstruation
Inner Season: Winter
Inner Moon Phase: Dark Moon
Body: Bleeding, releasing, turning inward
Emotional / Spiritual Focus: Shedding what no longer serves you
This is the inner winter phase and energy is at its lowest. Menstruation is a natural closing of a chapter, a physical letting go that mirrors an emotional one. Old grief, buried resentment, unspoken truths — often surface here, asking to be witnessed rather than pushed aside. If you are exhausted, overwhelmed, or running on empty, this phase is asking you to stop proving your worth through productivity and instead reconnect with your own quiet knowing. Slowing down becomes a superpower, revealing depth and wisdom for our lives.
Week 2: The Follicular Phase
Inner Season: Spring
Inner Moon Phase: Waxing Moon
Body: Hormones rising, energy returning, a sense of new light
Emotional / Spiritual Focus: Curiosity, initiation, fresh beginnings
As bleeding ends, something new starts to wake up again. This is spring energy, creating new seeds of hope and possibilities. You may notice new ideas arriving and a willingness and openness to new things. This phase invites you to ask: What do I want to grow this month? This is fertile ground for setting intentions — for your relationships, your healing, your work and your life.
Week 3: Ovulation
Inner Season: Summer
Inner Moon Phase: Full Moon
Body: Peak energy, confidence, connection
Emotional / Spiritual Focus: Self-expression, being seen
This is your full bloom. Many women feel more articulate, more magnetic, more able to hold space for others during this window. It's often the easiest time to have hard conversations, to advocate for yourself, to show up fully in your relationships, work and life. Enjoy this phase consciously and embrace this gift of vitality and expansive energy.
Week 4: The Luteal Phase
Inner Season: Autumn
Inner Moon Phase: Waning Moon
Body: Hormones shifting in preparation for menstruation, energy narrowing, sensitivity rising
Emotional / Spiritual Focus: Discernment, boundaries, truth
This is the phase challenging for many women and about protecting your energy. Unfortunately, this phase is labelled "PMS" and dismissed as irrational. However, this phase is naturally important in becoming more discerning. Presenting irritations were likely already a problem and your pre-menstrual self is simply less willing to tolerate it.
Your energy can be intense in this phase and is ‘sacred boundary-setting’ energy. The relationships, commitments, or patterns that feel unbearable now are showing you exactly where you need to set new boundaries for yourself. Rather than apologising for this phase, we can learn to listen to it and follow this energy for guidance.
When Life Feels Overwhelming
If you're pushing too hard and doing too much in a phases of your body's natural phase that requires rest and inward focus, it is likely you will end up in burnout and overwhelm. So if you find yourself in burnout and feeling overwhelmed, menstrual cycle awareness can be a powerful way to attune and move at the pace of your body’s natural rhythm. Living in attunement with these rhythms results in us to living in optimal health and vitality needed for a thriving life.
As women, we are moving through a wise and ancient rhythm that is calling us to honour it. Reclaiming our natural rhythm is an act of embodiment. It's a way of coming home to ourselves — trusting our winter as much as our summer, and our vulnerability as much as our radiance.
The embodied woman, often does not need fixing when she struggles. She most likely needs realigning and attunement with the cycles living inside her. Trusting in your own body's natural timing and capacity, is a powerful tool that supports you to move through life’s struggles, emotional overwhelm and exhaustion with more compassion and ease.
