The Spiritual Dimensions of Perimenopause

The ancient understanding held across many cultures and traditions is that a woman's life moves in cycles — not just the monthly rhythm of her body, but the over the greater cycles over her lifespan. Three main phases she moves through as known as Maiden, the Mother, and the Crone. Each phase presents with their own gifts, their own wisdom and their own medicine.
Perimenopause is the sacred passage moving from Mother towards Crone. The body’s hormones, menstrual cycle and spiritual aspects are transforming. This phase is the threshold between the woman who has been oriented outward — giving, nurturing, creating, building — and the woman who is being ca
lled inward, toward depth, discernment, and a quieter but more potent kind of power.
The Maiden and the Mother
The Maiden energy carries the gifts of beginnings — curiosity, possibility and open horizons. The Mother phase (which need not involve literal motherhood) is the energy of creation, of tending, of sustaining life in all its forms. For many women, the bulk of their adult lives have been lived here — in service, in relationship, in the beautiful and exhausting work of holding others. These phases are the ground from which the chapter of the Crone grows from.
The Crone
The word crone has been distorted by a culture that fears aging women. But in its original meaning, the Crone is the wise woman — the one who has lived enough to know what matters, shed what no longer serves her and no longer needs approval to take up space.
Perimenopause is the body's way of initiating this spiritual passage. The very symptoms that feel like loss — the intensity, the disruption, the stripping away of old coping patterns — can also be understood as a sacred unravelling. A woman’s being releases and changes so that something more aligned and power can emerge for this next phase of life.
Listening to the Crone Within You
Perimenopause can be seen as a spiritual invitation to ask, with genuine curiosity:
Who am I becoming?
What am I being asked to release?
What wisdom is quietly asking to be claimed?
This is the work of the spiritual threshold. It can be seen as a mystery unfolding and for many women this process is uncomfortable. Yet it is powerful — and it is your journey into claiming the role of the wise woman within you. This phase awakens a deeper spiritual richness: a hunger for stillness, for authenticity, for connection to something larger than the daily roles you have inhabited.
You are Not Declining - You are Deepening
Perhaps the most important reframe for women moving through perimenopause is not losing yourself. It is an invitation to meet a version of yourself not yet fully known — it is the wiser part of you who has been waiting patiently beneath the busyness, the performing and the giving. Perimenopause is a phase of the wise Crone and a time to be welcomed you blooms into your full power and potential.

Please reach out if you feel you are in this phase and would love support. This phase can be an opportunity to reclaim an inner power. I am here to support you to be able to embrace this process as it unfolds within you.
